Hi Sara, welcome to Studio Notes, put together for you alone from what is public. Two deadlines this month are worth clearing your desk for.
Open calls, grants & residencies
CTM Festival: Spatial Audio Experimentation Lab, Berlin
Four days of field trips around Berlin, listening and mixing sessions and a public presentation at CTM, on ‘the ways space can become an active element of musical composition’. Led by Jan St. Werner and Michael Akstaller of Folkwang's Sound Practice Research.
Why for you: Your outdoor pieces already treat the site as part of the score. A place here also gives you an invitation letter for a travel grant.

Finnish Cultural Foundation (SKR): the one round of the year
SKR now has a single application period a year, and one application reaches both the central fund and the regional funds. Mobility grants run separately: €3,000–10,000 for stays abroad of at least two weeks, next deadline 15 December.
Why for you: Miss this round and the next working-grant round is October 2027. Your application also reaches the Varsinais-Suomi regional fund.
Suomen Kulttuurirahasto
Lendhauer, Klagenfurt: ‘Urban Ecologies: Coexistence and Control’
A paid public-space brief for a city harbour: installations, interventions or performances about how humans, animals, plants and technical systems share urban space. Lendhauer helps with permits, and everyone hears back by the end of December.
Why for you: Written for exactly the kind of site-specific sound and sculpture you make, and it pays a proper fee.

Arts and Culture Agency (Taike): the new regional arts grant
The state's project grants and regional grants are now one grant, assessed by regional panels drawn from a new expert pool. The spring regional round is gone.
Why for you: This replaces the spring round you applied to last year, so your next state project money depends on this December deadline.

To see
Antti Tolvi: For Organ and Pause, HAM Helsinki
You lie on beds that vibrate at low frequency while organs sound continuously. Six times the drone stops for live pieces Tolvi composed; he calls the work ‘an organ you can step into’.
Why for you: Sound as something felt through the body, in a museum setting. Worth the train to Helsinki on a live date.
HAM Helsinki Art Museum
The Sound of, Museet for Samtidskunst, Roskilde
Spread over a former hospital area, an old gasworks and a 12th-century church ruin, where Hanne Lippard has set speakers on metal frames.
Why for you: A survey of sound in found sites, and Moderna Museet Malmö is a co-organiser to keep in mind for proposals.

Ideas
Patrick Langley: Tarek Atoui's Echo Chamber
Langley visits Atoui before he becomes the first sound artist to fill the Turbine Hall, and argues that listening is ‘a rigorously active process’ shaped by materials, rooms and bodies.
Why for you: A clear account of sound as sculpture at the largest scale there is.

Practice
State peer review rebuilt: 324 experts named to the new pool
The arts councils were abolished in the summer. Panels drawn from the new expert pool will judge state grant applications round by round.
Why for you: These are the people who will read your Taike application in December.
